Thornton Veterans Memorial News - Veterans Day 2007
Greetings to our supporters!
We have a few special notes we wanted to make everyone aware of:
cid:image003.gif at 01C78251.EA630BF0 Adams District 12 Seeks Veterans to
Honor with Diploma. We just received word that Adams District 12 has
instituted a program honoring veterans who are at least 60 years old, served
our country in WW II, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War and were unable to
complete their high school graduation requirements. Applicants must have
been honorably discharged. These men and women will be eligible to receive
a high school diploma from Adams District 12. This is an extraordinary
opportunity and Adams 12 should be commended! The district is sending us
the details but we were anxious to get the word out. If you know of any
veteran worthy of this honor, please let us know so we may help them get in
contact with the school district.
cid:image002.gif at 01C6CD77.8CB321F0 Veterans Day Events Abound. There are a
number of Veterans Day related events in the area this weekend. Please take
the time to attend one if you are able.
- Northglenn Veterans Day Event. Saturday, November 10, 11:00am.
Honor our Veterans with members of American Legion Post 22 of Northglenn in
the DL Parsons Theatre located in the Northglenn Recreation Center. There
will be a great program honoring all Veterans of all wars. Renowned speaker,
Jake Jabs (owner of American Furniture Warehouse) will talk. Some local
Desert Storm heroes will join us for you to meet and greet. The Legion's
crack unit of the Honor Guard will fire a 21-gun salute at the Veterans
Memorial after the ceremony.
- Denver Veterans Day Parade. Saturday, November 10, 10:00am - Noon.
Parade will start and end in Civic Center Park and will proceed down
surrounding streets. A tribute to veterans will take place in the park
immediately following the parade. The parade will proceed via 14th St. to
Court Pl. then to 15th St. and Welton St, east to 17th St., then south on
Broadway to 14th Ave. The reviewing stand will be located between Colfax and
14th Ave. on Broadway.
- Veteran Appreciation Dinner at Thornton Golden Corral. Monday,
November 12, 5:00pm - 9:00pm. A free meal will be provided to all active
military, reserve & guardsmen personnel as well as all veterans - no ID
required. The event is sponsored by the DAV and Golden Corral and this is
the 5th year running. The Thornton Golden Corral will have the Horizon
Marching Band playing service tunes and most likely the Boy Scouts will be
on hand. Older and disabled veterans should arrive early due to crowds.
cid:image003.gif at 01C78251.EA630BF0 Veterans Day 2007 Message. Army
Sergeant Eddie Jeffers wrote a letter to the editor back in February and in
it he said, "Even thousands of miles away, in Ramadi, Iraq, the cries and
screams and complaints of the ungrateful reach me. In a year, I will be
thrust back into society from a life and mentality that doesn't fit your
average man. And then, I will be alone. And then, I will walk down the
streets of America, and see the yellow ribbon stickers on the cars of the
same people who compare our President to Hitler."
Sadly, Sergeant Jeffers won't be walking down the streets of his hometown in
a year. At the young and tender age of 23, on September 19, 2007, he was
killed in Iraq. He paid the ultimate sacrifice - not only for Americans,
but for those that aspire to be like us. He did this despite believing that
he would not be appreciated.
And what about those that do come home from this war and those that have
from previous ones? What about those without limbs? Those with scars
earned on the field of battle? And what about those that bear scars beneath
the skin that aren't visible - the kinds of scars that will come to life in
nightmares every night for the rest of their lives?
When their time in the service is over and they try to piece together what's
left of themselves, will we be there as a nation to lend a hand? What will
we do to help those that have spent years dodging death and those that
cradled comrades as they died? Will we honor them and will we help them?
Will we turn our backs? Are they simply something to be ashamed of like
some odd kind of urban blight that we dare not look at and want to hide from
public view? Will we not at least take this one day a year to honor them?
All too often the soldiers, the Marines, the sailors and the airmen stand
alone. They stand when others are unwilling or unable. They answer the
call to serve while others turn a deaf ear.
God and the Soldier, we adore,
In time of danger, not before.
The danger passed and all things righted,
God is forgotten and the Soldier slighted.
- Rudyard Kipling
We dishonor all veterans when we do not take the time to properly recognize
our defenders on this, the one day set aside to ensure they are never
forgotten. This Veterans Day let us not forget their sacrifices; let us not
slight our veterans.
cid:image003.gif at 01C78251.EA630BF0 Next Meeting, Monday, December 3 @
7:00pm at the Thornton Civic Center. Our meetings are usually held on the
first Monday of the month but due to the Labor Day holiday, September's
meeting will be postponed one week. This project is a community project and
we wholeheartedly encourage anyone who is interested to attend to learn more
and if so inclined, to join us in helping to make the project a reality.
As always, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please don't
hesitate to contact us! Thank you for your continued support!
